SRSAN Awards

There are currently two awards given out by SRSAN to community members and self-advocates.

 

The Clarence Marsh Award

In 2004, SRSAN lost its friend and chairperson, Clarence Marsh. SRSAN established the Clarence Marsh Memorial Award as a way to honor their friend while recognizing other self-advocates. Since 2005, SRSAN has recognized 15 amazing self-advocates! Nominations are now open until June 30, 2021.

Who was Clarence Marsh?

Clarence (Butch) Marsh was a great man who worked very hard to promote self-advocacy and community inclusion. He was an active volunteer that set positive examples for others within the community. Clarence was also the President of the South Region Self-Advocacy Network . He was an excellent leader and role model. Clarence passed away suddenly on September 22, 2004. He will be missed immensely by his family and friends.

 

Who can be Nominated?

The nominee can be a friend and/or should be somebody you know. No self-nominations will be accepted. The nominee does not have to have leadership training, but should have leadership skills. The nominee must be a self-advocate and have all or most of the characteristics listed:

  • Good listening and communication skills

  • Understands and is open to new ideas from others

  • Is a good friend that motivates, encourages and respects others

  • Responsible and makes good choices

  • Confident

  • Promotes community inclusion

  • Sets an example for others to follow

  • Trusts and shares responsibilities

  • Involved with the community and promotes self-advocacy

  • Stands up for what he/she believes in

The Ally Recognition Award

This award recognizes the time, dedication and commitment of businesses, individuals, organizations, families and staff who help people with disabilities become engaged in the community through opportunity, skill development and advocacy. Since this award was created in 2008, we have had the privilege of honoring 12 allies. Nominations are now open for 2021 and close June 30, 2021. The winner will be chosen by SRSAN!

The nominee can be a business, family, organization, or a support staff. Self-nominations and SAIPA staff do not qualify for the award.

The nominee is someone who supports individuals to speak on their own behalf and:

  • Has a deep understanding of the history, the philosophy and the support of self-advocacy.

  • Helps people with disabilities to speak up and have a voice in the quality of their life.

  • Is a approachable support system that is a resource to people with disabilities.

  • Is co-operative and works well with others.

  • Motivates and encourages people to learn leadership skills.

  • Listens to what the person has to say and respects that the person may have a different view or makes a different choice. When necessary, tries to provide an explanation if something is not understood.

  • Is sensitive to issues, and helps problem-solve

  • Treats individuals with disabilities as adults and with respect.

  • Is involved with the community and promotes inclusion of all citizens.
